If you’ve only visited Niseko in the winter, you might be surprised to learn that one of its most photographed spots blooms in early summer. Just a short walk from JR Kutchan Station, this hillside garden spans over 4,000 square metres and bursts into colour each year with vibrant moss phlox (shibazakura) surrounded by bright yellow canola flowers, with a clear view of Mount Yotei in the background.
Shibazakura grows low to the ground in dense clusters, creating a soft carpet of pink, white, and purple blooms that look like cherry blossoms. The best viewing time is from late May to early June when they’re in full bloom and at their most vibrant.
The garden is the passion project of local resident Kazuo Mishima, who planted the flowers by hand and eventually opened up the space to visitors. His care and effort have turned the spot into a local favourite, and thanks to his generosity, the garden is open to the public free of charge.
While there’s no official parking on-site due to its residential setting, Kutchan town has set up a parking area near the end of the road, just a 250m walk away. Alternatively visitors can use the nearby car parks at Wanpaku Square or Asahigaoka Park.
